Psychology of Relationships :

2 - 3 Day Practical Workshop

The challenge of being in a relationship

One of the most challenging tasks you will ever face - is being in a relationship. We all learn from example, yet we are such complex beings that we can never be an exact copy of our parents. We can never find the same partnership as our parents did, as there have been so many changes in our world since they had their own relationship. We can learn, and we can take advice, yet relationships and 'the art of being in a relationship' constantly evolve.

The fundamental principles of being in a relationship more or less stay the same:
- the need to pro-create
- the need to be part of a family
- the need to spend time with another special person.

The changes in society, technology, lifestyle and a range of other factors means that we need to learn quickly, or we will become another statistic of what is deemed a failed relationship.

To this end, we can not only rely on the example that our parents did or even did not give us. We need to turn to all sorts of information sources, guru's, self-help books and more. We need to be open to learning, we need to be open to sharing, we need to be open to the experience of being in a relationship.

If you think a relationship is easy, then you really should not be considering being in one. A relationship takes time, effort, certain sacrifice, understanding, reflection, adaptation, and many other things to really make it work.

If you are in a relationship then by now you will know some of the pitfalls, some of the danger areas, some of the do's and some of the do not's.

If you are seeking to be in a relationship, then you need to learn fast. And for sure, if you have had past relationships that you deem have 'failed', then you definitely need to work on analysing and finding out where they went wrong, so that you can prevent repeating the same actions again in the future.

Are you happy right now ?

Are you happy with your relationship status right now ?

If you are SINGLE, and if you want to be in a relationship, then your answer should be NO.

If you are in a relationship, and if everything is not going according to plan, then your answer should be NO.

If you don't want to be in a relationship at all, then this workshop is definitely not for you ... however, maybe you have been in a relationship in the past and it did not work out, and if thats the case, do you know why it did not work out (and not some generic answer like we drifted apart ... do you have an understanding of the details?)

What if I asked you "Do you know how to build a strong long term relationship when you find the right person?"

This question in itself poses many additional questions! Finding the right person - how do you do that? Building a strong long term relationship - again how do you do that? How do you prevent making the same mistakes you might have made in the past? Is there a right person for you?

So how do you make your dream relationship stay a dream relationship?

If you know what you want, if you know what your partner wants, then your chances of keeping the dream relationship are pretty good. There are no guarantees in life, yet there are many ways in which you can reduce risk and improve success when looking at relationships.

But it is not easy. It takes work, it takes time, it takes effort.

Are you happy with what you have right now?

Four common factors that are important for a healthy relationship

Would you agree that a relationship can be like a box of treasures or really bad car crash? And would you also agree that relationships take work, time and effort?

What many people don’t think of when they start a relationship, is whether or not they are truly compatible with the other person. If you are starting to question compatibility, then this is just for you! Of course, many people will fall into a relationship due to the need to find someone, sometimes anyone! And there lies the issue! The snake rears its head ready to strike. And sometimes you are in a state of emotional frustration and the first person to show you kindness or affection becomes the next partner in your life

What if I told you that there is a simple method you can use, to see what works and what does not work in relationships. A method that takes you from an emotional state of mind, and gives you the rational abilities to focus on what counts, before you fall in love with the wrong person?

Well, most people who have either been in a serious long term relationship, or who are currently very happy in their relationship, will probably agree that the following are some of the most important factors to a healthy, strong and happy relationship:

  • Mutual Emotional Support (in other words you support each other through all types of emotional highs and lows)
  • Respect (something that is so critical yet sometimes not understood)
  • Companionship (which is different to friendship)
  • Trust (which is earned and not just given freely without condition)

And yet these are not the only things that are important. There are a multitude of other requirements  that can make or break a relationship.

In this workshop & masterclass you will learn :

  • a 4 part model based on rational evaluation of a relationship
  • how to identify your checklist of needs based on the 4 part model
  • how to identify if you are sacrificing who you are to be with your partner
  • important things you must know about what your partners needs from the relationship
  • how to analyse where any of your previous relationship have gone wrong
  • what signs to look out for when things could start to go wrong in your relationship
  • (If you are single) - how to avoid starting a relationship with someone who you are not compatible with
  • (If you are in a relationship) - where the fundamental areas are in your relationship where you can make positive changes
  • (If you have just ended a relationship) - other areas to consider before blaming one thing for the end of the relationship

If you can answer YES to any of the following questions

then this workshop is definitely for you

  • Have I previously allowed my emotions to decide the fate of a relationship ?
  • Do I avoid thinking rationally when it comes to decisions about my relationship ?
  • Am I in a relationship right now which I want to improve ?
  • Am I in a relationship right now which I want to end ?
  • Do I have a lack of understanding why previous relationships went bad ?
  • Did my parents leave my education about relationships to someone else ?
  • Am I 18 years of age or older ?
  • Do I have a desire to be in a serious relationship in the future ?
  • Do I want to improve my chances of having the best possible relationship with the right person ?
  • Am I looking for a clearer understanding of my needs and my partners needs with regards to a relationship ?
  • Do I want to be a great role model for my kids ?

What will we do in the workshop ?

The workshop is designed to give you both theory and practical time. This means that you will learn about certain concepts, and you will then be given practical exercises which will help define, build and strengthen your knowledge about some of the underlying important principles of a healthy relationship.

We will place you in groups of between 4 to 6 people, and you will be able to share some questions and get some answers from both the workshop leader and sometimes others within your group who might have been through similar experiences. The most important thing is that you will be taking action. You will be writing down notes, you will be creating your own checklists. You will be creating your own image or definition of what a successful relationship means to you.

And that is the most important thing! You will create your own detailed image of what you want, and what you can give to a relationship. It is all about you, your needs, and your partner, and their needs!

How can I benefit from attending the workshop ?

  • You will learn how to groups needs into different categories
  • You will understand why it is important to know yourself and also your partner
  • You will learn more about relationship dynamics
  • You will be able to grow any current or future relationship in a positive direction
  • You will understand why assuming things never works in a relationship
  • You will be able to identify where past relationships went wrong
  • (If you are single) - you will be able to create your own "rational" checklist for selecting the best possible partner
  • (If you are in a relationship) - you will be able to identify where things can be improved
  • (If you have just ended a relationship) - you will understand what went wrong and be able to get over the end of the relationship in a much shorter time span (without the need for endless months of self-doubt and resentment that often follow)
  • You will understand why it is important to communicate with your partner
  • You will become a better partner in the relationship
  • You will stop wanting to sacrifice who you are to be with someone
  • You will understand how important it is to know yourself and to know your partner
